The rough lava fields in the Timanfaya National park

The Timanfaya National Park is a protected nature reserve. For the largest part of this area, you are not allowed to visit without a guided tour. There is the possibility to go through this volcanic area by tour bus. You will also see some geothermal demonstrations because of the heat still present in the ground. However, there is one hike that you can do on your own: El Ruta del Litoral. This 12 kilometers long trail starts at El Golfo. It leads you along the rough northern coast of Lanzarote with its volcanic surroundings.

Prices

The hike Ruta de Litoral is free! But be aware that it’s quite a hike, but you can, of course, just walk a part of the whole 12-kilometer-long hike. If you want to do the guided (bus)tour through the volcanic area, you cannot do this for free. It’s 12 euros for adults, and 6 euros for children.

Accessibility

You can reach this national park easily by car. Especially if you’re planning to do the guided tour, you can just park your car at the place where your guided (bus)tour will start. If you want to do the hike El Ruta del Litoral, you should drive a bit further to the national park, over some dirt roads, but it is really doable.

Facts

There is still volcanic activity on the island! Suppose you plan to do the guided bus tour through the Timanfaya National Park. In that case, they will show some geothermal demonstrations where you can see this.
