The unique vineyards in la Geria

La Geria is located at the border of the Timanfaya National Park, the volcanic area of Lanzarote. Even when hard to imagine, the volcanic soil was ideal for farming and growing grapes to make wine! Because it can be so windy in Lanzarote, they thought of an idea to protect the plants from the wind; they made holes in the ground to put the plants in and built stones around them. You can visit the wine museum El Grifo to learn more about how they make the wines, or you can visit one of the many wineries located in this area.

Accessibility

If you want to visit this area, we recommend doing this by car (notice that drinking and driving is not allowed in Lanzarote!) or with a bike. It is not really easy with public transport to get there. Another option, which is a bit more expensive, is a taxi. However, the different wineries are also located a bit separate from each other.

Tips and Tricks

Suppose you are interested in how this volcanic wine is made. In that case, we highly recommend you visit the wine museum El Grifo. However, if you want to bring one or a few bottles home, you better visit the small wineries. We visited Vega Volcano, which really had delicious wines which you could try in their beautiful garden. The bottles are cheaper than at touristic places such as the museum, and you really help the small wine owners.
