The Caldera blanca volcano

The Caldera Blanca is one of the most impressive volcanoes of Lanzarote because its crater has a diameter of 1200 meters. During the eruptions between 1730 and 1736, the lava could not reach this volcano. Therefore, it has its white appearance in contrast to the black volcanic surroundings. You can hike this volcano for free and without a tour guide. The starting point is nearby Mancha Blanca, and it will take around 3 to 4 hours. It is a loop trail. You start about 200m above sea level, so the hike is not too strenuous.

Prices

The hike to the Caldera Blanca is entirely free, with no entrance fees or anything!

Accessibility

You can quite easily reach the starting point for the hike to the Caldera Blanca. There is a small parking place that you reach by driving a short dirt road in the village of Mancha Blanca. From there you have to start walking!

Facts

The hike to the Caldera Blanca is not really difficult. Still, you should be aware that you walk over the volcanic soil most of the time, so that’s an extra difficult degree. As mentioned already, there is not a lot of elevation, so it’s definitely doable.

Tips and Tricks

For a really great experience, you can do this hike at sunrise. Start really early (depending on the time you visit; therefore, check the sunrise time before), around 2 hours before dawn. We highly recommend you follow the path that brings you to the summit, but this path can be challenging to find when it is still dark. We thought we had to climb the volcano randomly, but we should have followed the trail just a little further. It can be dangerous to climb the volcano without following the path, especially when it is windy. So bring a torch and watch out for the trail!
